Vincent Chin was a Chinese American who was beaten to death in 1982 by two white men who mistook him for a Japanese. His murder happened when people in the American auto industry were laid off because of the rising Japanese auto industry. These men received a light sentence – no jail time, 3 yrs probation. They were later acquitted and cleared of all charges. Vincent Chin’s murder was one of the first major hate crimes toward Asians in the post-civil rights era, and placed Asian American rights on the national scene.
