The National Urban League Summer Internship Program
The National Urban League Summer Internship Program provides an insight into the world of non-profit management for college students, from the New York City metropolitan area and in Washington, DC. The National Urban League is looking for candidates interested in a career in the not-for-profit sector, or in understanding the connection between non-profits, corporations, and government in the work of our nation.
Internships are available in several areas:
Essential Functions for Entrepreneurship Intern:
- Work with staff in the development of the annual Small Business Matters conference, a one day event that focuses on management, marketing and financing for small business owners and is held at the National Urban League conference in Ft. Lauderdale.
- The assistance includes speaker coordination, review of business pitch submissions and on site participation of the management of the conference
- Research information on supplier diversity (business program that encourages the use of: diverse-owned, women owned, veteran owned, LGBT-owned, service disabled veteran owned, historically underutilized business, and SBA defined small business vendors as suppliers.), so that more clients of the National Urban League’s Entrepreneurship Center program can take advantage of new business opportunities in the corporate sector
- Work with staff on developing a program evaluation system that can be used to ensure that program participants are receiving the services that they need to grow and expand their businesses.
Essential Functions for Events Marketing Intern :
Ideal candidate likes business, perhaps with an aspiration to become an Entrepreneur
- Create reports and competitive research for meetings
- Help with planning and implementation of a wide variety of programs and activities for the National Urban League
- Tracking the details and logistics of various vendors and contracting process to final payments
- Work as part of the team supporting during Small Business Conference
- Must have the ability to prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced, multi-faceted, creative environment and must be able to work well under pressure
- Maintaining budget spreadsheets in excel
- Create PowerPoint presentations
.Essential Functions for Washington Bureau:
Attend various congressional hearing on policy issues related to NUL legislative agenda
- Provide written briefing on hearing
- Assist in monitoring key legislation related to our agenda & attend coalition meetings
- Writing policy brief , action alerts etc.
- Working with the Research dept. on special assignments
- Coordinate National Urban League Interns on the Hill visit
Essential Functions for President’s Intern:
- Special projects for the President & CEO
- Assist in the onsite Office of the President at Annual Conference
- Writing correspondence on behalf of the President
- Assist with the Delegate Assembly meeting at Annual Conference
Essential Functions for Education & Youth, Health & Quality of Life Interns:
Research Assistant
- Lead and/or support on 1-2 of the Youth Leadership Summit (YLS) Workshops, Registration & Urban Voices
- Assist with and where appropriate lead the planning and execution of the YLS, per supervisor’s approval.
- Support Project Ready: PSS Evaluation and related activities
- Whitney M. Young, Jr. (WMY) Leadership Summit Data Management- assembling program notebooks, aggregating data.
- WMY Program Schedule development support
- Conduct Education and Youth Development (EYD) research, as assigned by EYD Vice President or Senior Director
- Assist Senior Director in preparing funder reports
- Project Ready portfolio
- Special projects assigned by supervisor
Special Assignment
- Lead and/or support on 1-2 of the Youth Leadership Summit (YLS) Workshops, Registration & Urban Voices
- Assist with the planning and execution of the YLS, as assigned by supervisor.
- YLS onsite registration and participant badge production
- YLS Project Ready College Fair
- All icebreaker sessions @ YLS
- Project Ready Mentor
- Special projects assigned by supervisor
Essential Functions for Talent Management Intern
Coordinate marketing and outreach with local area for Career Fair
- Execute social media strategy for Career Fair
- Work with Director, HR and Learning to coordinate training sessions for Emerging Leaders Program
- Liaise with summer interns on program activities
- Assist with onsite management of workshops and corporate relations during Career Fair
